Noelle Kaufmann – For my final project, I decided to do a mixture of a proposal for the University of Michigan not to incorporate AI within the art programs, as well as an informative rundown of AI in art and its history. I wanted to make it not seem like a super severe proposal but more like a way to learn about the consequences of using it within the field of art and the controversies around its incorporation. This idea was sparked because of week 9’s topic of “AI in the Creative Industries.” I think this topic is a vast area to dive deeper into and interests me because now so much AI can create art, but the whole purpose of art is the creativity and storytelling of emotions that get added to make a masterpiece. If an AI robot can do it and they don’t have feelings, is that even considered creative or artistic? And that is why I wanted to explain the history and progress of AI blending in with art. I found many examples of AI pieces of work and opinions from people on the topic to show how a robot doing art is starting lots of issues. The idea of the art programs here at this university is to embrace creativity, the process, and excellence. I think incorporating AI to make projects in art is not what the program embraces.
I wanted to test AI and its abilities to create a design and look for a PowerPoint, so this led to my idea of how I went about this presentation. I used the website beautifulAI and told the AI function to give me the outline look of the slides and had it choose a design for the prompt I gave it: a proposal for keeping art and AI separate. It gave me many images of random people and cool-looking designs for the backgrounds and headers. I didn’t like the look of a lot of the pictures or header titles, so I changed them with the other images it had in the database and was able to change the looks of the graphs it had accessible and the themes. I had it do the more creative side of the PowerPoint, and I did the research part because it would be ironic when talking about AI-making art. I saw the flaws in its abilities regarding a personal liking for themes as colors are a big part of how I want something to look and design likings. Overall, it was a helpful way to make a PowerPoint. I feel that a lot of people spend so much time on the design element instead of the work in it, and this can make it for you, and then you can edit it off of there and just add in the research and work of the project.
